The Templar is the only full-on tank class in Aion. This class will be chosen if you wish for your main goal in the game to become a "meat shield." Tanks are the first to attack other players in PvP or other mobs during PvE. A tank's job is to keep all enemies focused on them, rather than the lower defense allies.

To assist in the defensive area of combat, the Templars are specialized in using swords and shields. Shields help defend the Templar against enemy attacks, and the swords allow them to dish out damage (although considerably less than the damage dealing classes). Most of their skills require this combination of armor and weapon, making this the most efficient combination to use.

Probably the most frustrating thing about this class is that you will not be racking up kills, and instead will just be helping your allies get the kills instead. Your job is solely to protect and nothing else, which can to many players get boring after a period of time. But that also makes this class one of the most important ones in the game.

Strategy
As a Templar your goal is to get up as close to your enemies as possible and taunt them into attacking you. This is significantly easier with allies that use ranged attacks than with rangers or assassins. To assist with this, there are many passives the Templar obtains, along with multiple skills, that not only do damage but also increase the amount of threat on you. This helps because it assists with the kill while at the same time ensuring mobs will attack you instead of others.

Do keep in mind that as a tank you will usually be the first one to die in groups (assuming your healer is doing their job). As you get to know different players and play with them more often, you will start to learn how to most efficiently group with one another. This is extremely important because different people play with different styles. Some healers, for example, will wait until you are at half health before healing, and others will differ by healing when you have 20% or even 80%. This is extremely important to know about the healer you are with because it will help you determine whether or not they are being attentive. If they are always healing at 50%, for example, and all of a sudden you are at 30% without a heal, it is probably a good idea to start running. Knowing these things will save a lot of time and money (paying to remove your death penalty).
