Like it or not, audio interconnects are not going away for awhile. There's a number of factors for manufacturers such as quality, security and price. Nonetheless this doesn't imply that wireless techonolgy can't provide you with a helping hand now for your wireless surround sound systems.

While wired technology probably still has an advantge over wireless, the gap is closing quickly. Unless your a hardcore audiophile you will probably be unable to perceive any distinction at all. Why don't we check out the technology behind a wireless speaker system.

First recognize that there really aren't true wireless surround sound systems. Since you still have to amplify the audio signal you still need power so every system will require a minimum of a connection to a power source. There are a few battery powered systems on the market but these are generally for use with a multi-room audio system instead of a wireless surround sound system.

So the real advantage of wireless surround sound systems is not needing to run speaker wire all around the room. Normally this would be used for your rear surround speakers or for that subwoofer you need to place away from your main system for optimum sound. Fundamentally it gives you the chance to concentrate on the sound rather than on the complications of installation.

One thing to bear in mind is that wireless systems generally operate either over a 900MHz or 2.4 GHz band. To ensure a good signal, most of the systems use a pretty robust RF transmitter. Because most wireless home networks also work in the 2.4GHz band you could in fact cause interference with your wireless home network. Bear this in mind when you design your wireless surround sound systems.

Many home-theater-in-a-box solutions today include integrated wireless rear speaker solutions. You can also find add-on wireless surround sound systems available for your existing home theater. Add-on units consist of a small sending unit that connects to your A/V receiver. The signal is then sent to a powered audio receiver at the location of the remote speakers. After this you connect the speakers and the rear audio receiver using standard speaker wire. Again, the advantage is not having to run speaker wire across the room to connect your rear speakers.

Remember that you may use an add-on system for more than just connecting your rear speakers. They can be used as a cheaper alternative to in-wall wiring and multi-room installs for whole house music systems.

However you put it to use, installing wireless surround sound systems is generally a simple process. Generally you power up the wireless system, connect your sound source and your done. No doubt that as technology improves the quality of the systems will improve as well but the systems that are offered today can already give a clear solution to the problem of wiring over the floor and provide more than sufficient audio quality for the typical home theater fan. Take a look at what's available and start enjoying wireless surround sound systems today!
